The River Dove is on your right, at the base of Thorpe Cloud. Venturing off to higher ground and to the summit of Baley Hill. Turn left to follow the boundary wall. Continue over Baley Hill and start the decline. For most of the way there will not be many people on the path (even at weekends . The path was also flooded in some areas but still passable. The gradient was gentle and we eventually emerged into buttercup meadows. The delightful valley is one of the most popular places in the national park with its distinctive limestone scenery, fascinating caves and diverse plant life.You continue north past Bunster Hill, the Dove Hole Caves and the striking Ilam Rock before coming to Milldale. Then another 1 km across several more fields youll reach a small road, on the left theres a small stone stile, go through it and across the field, around a house. Once you reach the River Dove, youll see the popular Dovedale Stepping Stones. Head diagonally over to the wire fence alongside the copse and follow the fence up to a stile. Turn right down Green Lane shortly turning left onto another footpath to Shining Tor and on towards Milldale. If you are unable to cross (or youve caught them at a busy time and dont want to wait), you can follow the footpath to the left of the River Dove (with the river on your right). Route: Hartington Dales. The 17th-century Jacobean mansion is Grade II* listed and includes pretty garden terraces and a stable block. There are car parking attendants due to the popularity of the Dovedale area. Its a 20 minute steep ascent (1.4 km extra there and back) and the views are well worth the effort. The village is worthy of exploration with the pretty Bentley Brook, a 14th century church and a fine inn with particularly lovely gardens to see.
